Stamp duty is based on: Purchase price/consideration paid, UNLESS the Commissioner isn't satisfied it reflects the vehicle's value, in which case market value is used instead. It's payable by the buyer.
Passenger vehicles: ≤$600 = flat $20; $600.01-$35,000 = $3 per $100 (or part); $35,000.01-$40,000 = $1,050 + $11 per $100 over $35,000; ≥$40,000.01 = $4 per $100. Other vehicles (excl. heavy/fleet-discount): $3 per $100. Heavy vehicles: $1 per $100. New vehicle bought with manufacturer's fleet discount (non-heavy): $3.50 per $100, min $20.
Transfer fee: the current figure on Tasmania's transport authority
Selling in Tasmania? Notice of Disposal
If you're selling, you need to lodge a Notice of Disposal within 7 days, online, by post, by email, or in person at a Service Tasmania shop; a copy is given to the buyer.
Write-Off Status
Damaged so severely it cannot be repaired to a standard suitable for re-registration; can never be re-registered anywhere in Australia.
Assessed as a total loss but doesn't meet statutory criteria; can be re-registered after repair by an approved body repairer, AIS inspection, and a vehicle identity check.
Your PPSR search result will show if the vehicle is on the Written-Off Vehicle Register.
Before You Buy: Universal Checks
- Run an official PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register) vehicle search on ppsr.gov.au using the VIN - it's the only source of truth for money owing, stolen or written-off status. Third-party sites charge a mark-up for the same search; use the official site.
- Match the VIN on the vehicle itself (compliance plate/windscreen) against the VIN on the registration papers and the PPSR result - they must all match exactly.
- Meet in person, somewhere safe and public if possible, and check the seller's ID matches the name on the registration papers.
- Never pay a deposit or balance via PayID, gift cards, or a payment link sent by the seller - use a traceable bank transfer, and confirm the account name matches the person you've verified in person.
